Everything you need to know about Once Upon a Broken Heart - the upcoming new release from Stephanie Garber, bestselling author of the Caraval series.

Release Date: 30th September 2021

Once Upon a Broken Heart
(Cover to be released)

After being met with such huge success for her first series, the anticipation has never been higher to see what Stephanie Garber will release next. In December 2020, she sent book-lovers everywhere into a spin with the announcement of her latest book, which will be set in the same world as Caraval, but focusing on a new protagonist. Garber has assured us that it is not necessary to read Caraval first, but the book will answer some much sought after questions about everyone's favourite Prince of Hearts, Jacks. So what do we know so far about the new release?

Once Upon a Broken Heart will be published by Hodder & Stoughton, with whom Garber has a two book deal, so we can fairly safely say that the book will be part of a duology (or perhaps more). While the book will focus predominantly on Jacks, the Prince of Hearts, and his relationship to the new protagonist, Evangeline, Garber has hinted that there may be some cameos from other Caraval characters too.

The synopsis reads:

Evangeline Fox was raised in her beloved father's curiosity shop, where she grew up on legends about immortals, like the tragic prince of hearts. She knows his powers are mythic, his kiss worth dying for, and that bargains with him rarely end well.

But when Evangeline learns that the love of her life is about to marry another, she becomes desperate enough to offer the Prince of Hearts whatever he wants in exchange for his help to stop the wedding. The prince only asks for three kisses. But after Evangeline's fist promised kiss, she learns that the Prince of hearts wants far more from her than she'd pledged. And he has plans for Evangeline that will either end in the greatest happily ever after, or the most exquisite tragedy...

She has not explicitly said so, but the book is likely to be from Evangeline's perspective, and is set in a place within the Caraval world that her other books did not visit. Garber has also revealed that Evangeline's surname, Fox, may well have some kind of relevance to the story itself.

For any bookworms who are lucky enough to own a copy of the special collector's edition hardback of Caraval, you can find a snippet of the prologue to Once Upon a Broken Heart in the bonus material in the back. Get a copy here.

Earlier in February, Garber released a teaser on her Instagram story (IG: @stephanie_garber), where she shared a couple of lines from the new book:

"He gave her a real smile, revealing a pair of dimples that briefly made him look more angel than devil. But she imagined even angels would need to beware of him. She could picture him flashing those deceptive dimples as he tricked an angel into losing its wings just so he could play with the feathers."

While the official covers have not yet been released, Garber has suggested that, like the Caraval series, there will be different designs for the UK and for the US editions. She recently took to Instagram to reveal that both editions have been finalised, and should be revealed some time early in March.

The book will also contain some form of map (left), which is always exciting for any fantasy lovers!

"Today was for many things, including early attempts at a map for Once Upon a Broken Heart. But don't worry, the final map will be rendered by a professional. 💔🍎✨"
